Asnieres part 1

May 28

Asnieres is a nice drive from Solesmes. During cocktail hour the day before, Michael had suggested we visit this little town, the oldest Medieval town in France. With the fiasco of Le Mans the previous day, we were more than ready for a new outing.
Sun had been promised but the day began cloudy; we set off right after Mass.

The drive into Ansieres.

Walking towards town.

Dad walking towards the Church. St. Hilaire was built in 3 stages: 10th, 12th and 15th century. The entrance is 10th century.

Tower of St. Hilaire

Above are two frescos (there were many more) dating back to the 10th century. Truly unbelievable how vivid they remain.

Opposite of the frescos is the main part of the Church and the altar. The further down you go, the younger the building. (Check out Dad looking at the ceiling). On the left you can see the class of children who were visiting the town on an "excursion".
