As some of you may recall, the St. Agnes Varsity Basketball team made city news when they went to their first ever division championship game last March. Leading most of the game, they would lose by four points in an agonizing 4th quarter loss to Blessed Sacrament.
Now they have a chance to set the record straight.
I watched St. Agnes, who has led the league all season, win an outstanding victory in their semi-final game Monday night. Tomorrow night they travel back to Iona College in New Rochelle for a rematch against Blessed Sacrament. If they can avoid their tendency to fold under too much expectation, they have a real shot at victory.
Other than pulling from the same demographic, St. Agnes and Blessed Sacrament have very different cultures when it comes to basketball. A school known for basketball, Blessed puts much of its money into building its program, recruits heavily, and sadly doesn't graduate some of their players. New Rochelle is also Blessed's hometown, so they will pack the gym with fans.
St. Agnes, well, we don't really have a gym.
Say a prayer! The game starts at 6pm tomorrow night and, should we win, it may be our first championship ever. In anything.
Go Stags!
