They did a phenomenal job last night, I couldn't be happier about their performance. Witnesses were strong and steady, lawyers were professional and assertive and handled the (few) objections we received. We got in our "expert witness" and blocked their's from being put in with a snazzy voir dire and we were effective with our objections, many of which are sustained and many of which caused their lawyers to have to skip questions. We weren't perfect, but this is the best team we have ever fielded and these are just opening rounds.
The girls were also very good. Well-spoken, professional, polite, calm, prepared--but they didn't have our arsenal. Waiting quietly for the verdict my whole team and our handful of fans felt really confident that we had won. Despite well-matched competition, we were certain we had the edge. Pretty sure our competitors did too based on their expressions and body language.
Unfortunately the judge thought otherwise, and it surprised everyone in the room. What can you do? Good for the girls, they were nice. Stags were good sports, but pretty disappointed and a bit deflated. I have always been able to predict easily the winner, and this is the first time I have been wrong.
But we are not out yet! It is up to points--depending on how many spots are available, the teams who have accumulated the most points with one win and one loss will be among the 48 to move on. Last year were did not move on, but last year we did not compete nearly as well as this year! We will get the call Saturday.
I really, really, really, really hope we get another shot. We have worked so hard and these boys really want to keep competing and keep learning. So keep up those HHQ's, plez.
Go Stags.
