I'll Have a Farm in Somers
Ok, not a farm. A garden. But the title's better.
In any event, I don't know what most of you all dream about (besides a trip to Disneyworld for Mojo). But I dream of growing an organic garden, of canning and fermenting and preserving and freezing.
Bell peppers, celery, carrots, onions, zucchini, Italian green beans, broccoli and broccoli rabe. Probably not kale, because who really eats that. But spinach yes, and lettuces. And definitely tomatoes, perhaps potatoes, sweet if they'll grow (these are the things I need to learn.) Fall veggies too, pumpkin and winter squash. No gords, by edict of the Duke of Brooklyn.
The kids will help weed and pick our loot, and we'll work hard to preserve it for winters' use. Because organic produce is just so expensive, and everyone knows that local produce is the gentlest for this earth and our bellies.
Oh, and did I mention the raspberry and blueberry bushes?
And the deep freezer? Yes, there will be a deep freezer. But that's the easy part, so that will probably come first. Call me my father's daughter, I'll be proud of it.
You're all invited for supper. We'll have a big table. I dreamt of that before I dreamt of the garden.
p.s. I won't go so far to dream of egg-laying hens. The garden has to come first.

This sounds just about perfect to me.
Why not chickens? and may I suggest rabbits? There was a time when I could take a rabbit out of its cage, kill and dress it and have it ready for the freezer in about 3 minutes flat. And it was delicious, ask your Ma. And believe me, rabbits multiply really fast -- like, well, rabbits.
We dream the same dream, my love. Can I join you? Really, really, this sounds like the heaven I've always dreamed of.
don't all little girls dream of canning, fermenting, perserving, and freezing?
also, careful with your pestisides, plez. me alergic!
Organic silly! : )
Oh, and I'll grow black beans as well. Dad, if you could kill the rabbits, at least until I could man up for that, we'd raise those too. Cheaper than finding grass-fed meat.
This post soothes me. I love your dream, you should go get your dream and set a place for me at the supper table.
This is a beautiful post.
But do all little girls have this dream? I didn't. Canning, preserving and fermenting completely eluded me....not part of any vocabulary in my home.
I wanted to be a writer.
Or to be married to a cowboy and live on a horse ranch.
Or study Philosphy and be able to write about/argue it's finer points.
Life surprises, doesn't it?
Ah, but you married the next best thing to a cowboy. (and didn't get led a merry chase?)
true that!
Annie, I want in. I want my kiddies at that big dinner table outside in summertime. And I want you living 5 minutes from me for last minute homemade wine tastings after our kids have been bathed.
Score.
What else IS there, right?? Ah, homemade wine... my fatherinlaw attempts it regularly. He could teach you and Chad, and we'll trade goods : )
And would you not want children simply for the post-bath pajama time in the summer?
I'm dying here. Can we please make this a reality?
Even if this didn't sound so glorious, I'd be sold on that picture of the dinner table that reminds me so much of the dinner party scene in "Chocolat." Yum.
