What is this all about?
I am now almost finished with "Falls the Shadow", the 2nd of Sharon Kay Pelman's "Here be Dragons" trilogy. A pivotal and horrific battle ensued at Evesham. Having just read about this battle, I feel compelled to post these pictures for Clare, because she encouraged Lisette to read these novels; and for Lisette, because she, in turn, nagged me to do the same.
These historic novels take place in Medieval times, spanning the 12th and 13th centuries. They are fascinating.
"Between the idea
And the reality
Between the motion
And the act
Falls the Shadow"
During the Dissolution of the Monasteries of the 16th century, the abbey of Evesham was plundered and demolished by the townsfolk. Only the bell tower survives.

If you go a little down this road and look towards the town, you will see the Bell Tower.
If you were flying those captured de Montfort banners, they could have been seen by Simons Barber from the tower as chronicled and depicted in the church's stained glass.
Bishop de Cantaloupe giving communion to Simon's men and Simon.

Simon de Monfort's Coat of Arms.

The pics don't come through.
Better now.
For all of you who haven't read this trilogy, beginning with "Here Be Dragons", trust us, Clare, Lisette and me, that you are missing out.
And no, I have given nothing away with this post.
I have started with Sunne in Splendor, but am very much looking forward to the trilogy. Penman is a master of the written word. What a thrilling read!
Obviously I added to the post.
But stuff went wrong and the quote kept printing the way you see it.
Btw, it comes from T.S Eliot's, "The Hollow Men".
I tried to add that but HUGE LETTERS appeared.
So I gave up.
Mom, you are just like Maureen. "I'm not giving anything away.. but let me just tell you this!"
STOP GIVING STUFF AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!
ps - Glad you loved the book :)
Hey! I gave nothing away! You can't read these books without finding out - pretty early on - that battles are a huge part of the history.
There was a bad, bad battle at Evesham.
Soldiers were given Holy Communion.
The enemy tricked our guys.
Most noblemen had a Coat of Arms.
I gave away what?
Go back to work, Lisette.
PS did you know that the Banners were soaked in wax so that they would harden and thus be seen more clearly?
Lisette, Clare's pretty bad at that too.
And will also deny it.
Oh, try being the third person in the car when Clare and Mom are "not" giving anything away. A-GAIN. Try telling them they are. And see the indignance/defensiveness in both of them. Made worse by backing each other up.
And see Clare tell me anyway. And tell me that with a good movie, you're supposed to enjoy watching it for it's own sake. Not for surprises.
Oh. Ok. Thanks.
I have a really good book for you both:
"Alice in Wonderland"
And I won't give anything away.
NOT FOR SURPRISES?!?! Girl's nuts. Now I really want to suggest a movie, get her excited for it, and tell her the ending. the i'll be all YOU SHOULD ENJOY IT FOR IT'S OWN SAKE!
