The Mood Cure

A third of the way through this book, and must recommend it.

If you've got insomnia, blahs, are oversensitive, PMS or any hormonal sensitivity, crave sweets, alcohol, caffeine, feel sluggish mid-day, have anxiety, depression, anger... read this.

She discusses how amino acids are the precursors of neurotransmitters, which in turn control our moods. And how you can supplement with OTC aminos to help your brain relearn balance.

Supplementation is only necessary for a few months, because for long term balance you also need to...

Eat three square meals, with lots of protein in each one, every day. Protein is our source of amino acids. If you're eating toast and cereal instead, you're screwed. Top it off with coffee, and woah. If after eating this way you're feeling yucky and emotional, that's why. And it just ain't necessary.

We've already tried some aminos, the effects are instant and wonderful. Will be trying some on my kids as well, all three.

Enjoy not feeling like crap!

Thx Ann....This is right up there, similar to eating "Clean" and the new Atkins, like we discussed. Sounds like a happy medium. My new favorite food?..pomegranites.... i put them in everything..now that I know how to cut into it!

nothing I can say better than Ann did but just want to point out that the phrase "instant and wonderful" is not an exaggeration. After figuring out which area I was deficient in (I'm confining my comments here to nutritional deficiency only since, as you know very well, in most respects the word is inapplicable) I took the supplement and had noticeably increased and steady energy and focus, after literally 5 minutes, and it stayed all day.
It worked that way for me at any rate. I say get on the trolley, kiddos.

So, what are these supplements?

Answer Dad, Frank!!

They are amino acids, and there are multiple options, depending on what you want to remedy.

We originally bought this book to get off the caffeine/sugar/wine train that had us feeling worse and worse. We've learned how other symptoms are related, like spacing out instead of being able to work... or not getting excited about things like i used to. All signs of the chronic stress we've been under depleting aminos, compounded by not eating well and relying on the coffee/wine thing.

So for instance we supplement 5-HTP which makes seratonin, the well-known feel-good neurotransmitter, and take this midday instead of reaching for sugar. I haven't craved any wine in the past three days, and didn't need caffeine morning, despite going solo w/the kids while Frank slept his night shift off.

Andrew just researched that and had me buy that last week!

Getting 5-HTP today for Dad and me.
And I'm thinking it might be a good idea to read the book.

Normally, Maureen, I would take exception to such an impertinent comment. Did I really deserve 2 (two) exclamation points?
But owing to the restored good feelings brought on by 5htp, I am in no way inlcined to harbor any ill will and have happily let it go...this time.

I have been taking 5htp for two or three days and today is my first day with a free form amino acid as well. The results are still very good. That I can't remember whether it's been two or three days may concern you but trust me, it is not the fault of the supplements. Nothing new there.

Mars,
you are very welcome. The phrase guinea pig comes to mind (for a couple of reasons) but I'm glad to be it. And may I say it is so refreshing to read a positive and grateful comment!! You could give an etiquette lesson to some others contributors to this blog. Not that I harbor any ill will and I don't like to point fingers but her name rhymes with Bore-een.

Mars said...

hahahahahahahaha Bore-een you stink.

Maureen said...

yeah yeah yeah,Frank. How about how your comments make me laugh out loud!!!!!!? There's 5 exclamation points and one question mark for you.

This piqued my interest somepin good! I've been super tired lately for no reason whatsoever and this HAS to help, right? Can you just get these at a vitamin store?

Frank said...

yup, we got ours at a vitamin shoppe

and, Mo, you're a great sport and I love you (period)

KBB said...

I've ordered the book.
Had to squint my eyes to read the cover but saw enough to realize that this is not a "one cure for all".

I'm happy to pass it around when I'm done.

PS Umm. Aloise is super tired...for no reason at all.
Are you sure about that, little girl?

Annie said...

oh SNAP!

The Captain said...

Que es eso de 'snap?"

Annie said...

Mom if you got to a vitamin store before you get the book, get 5-htp, Tyrosine and GABA.

Frank said...

Capt, with respect to your inquiry, I found the following fromm urbandictionary.com

OH Snap!
(exclamatory phrase) a playful indication of surprise, misfortune, or insult

... OH SNAP is seemingly derivative of oh no you didn't where an insulted person, for example a guest of Jerry Springer or often a spunky African American woman contends the insult being made against him/her. While derivative of "oh no you di-int," OH SNAP has more of an emphasis on playfulness and can be said by people other than those being insulted.

The Captain said...

Well snap my garters, I'd never a guessed.

The Captain said...

Funny thing, Aloise hasn't responded. Oh snap, there I go again, jumping to conclusions. Why do I think awful snap-word is going to get wrung dry? Lita would NEVER have approved!!

Shmalzy said...

Oh for crying out loud. Yes Mom, for no reason at all!

KBB said...

No reason to get snappy, Shmalzy.

Shmalzy said...

No reason at all :)
