What a sad, sad day for the sorry rest of us pilgrims still down here.

What a beautiful woman.

Yes...one of the most elegant ones I knew.

I spoke to Maureen just a little bit ago, before checking the blog. She thanked me again for taking her to see Maureen and the family last night - said "I feel so full" - which was the exact, perfect way to express her response to such a grace-filled experience.

Last night, as we all sat in and waited for Mass to begin, young Maureen said, in a quiet and joyful voice, "Mom, you're free".

Yes, Maureen in free! What a glorious truth.

For the rest of us, though, a world without that dear, lovely woman is going to be a much sadder place to live.

My heart goes out to the Smith family. News that is so sad and joyous at once is difficult to contain.
